Full job description

An upscale market is confidentially seeking an experienced Closing Produce Manager to lead evening operations within a busy, quality-focused produce department.

This hands-on leadership position is responsible for maintaining exceptional freshness, presentation, cleanliness, inventory, and customer-service standards through the end of each business day. The Closing Produce Manager will supervise the evening team, keep the department fully stocked and visually appealing, minimize product loss, and ensure it is properly prepared for the following morning.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and supervise produce department employees during evening and closing shifts.
  • Assign daily responsibilities, monitor performance, and ensure work is completed accurately and on time.
  • Maintain abundant, attractive, and well-organized produce displays throughout the evening.
  • Inspect products regularly for freshness, quality, appearance, and proper rotation.
  • Remove damaged, spoiled, or unacceptable merchandise promptly.
  • Replenish displays from back-stock while following proper rotation and handling procedures.
  • Ensure all products are accurately priced, labeled, signed, and displayed.
  • Maintain department merchandising standards, including seasonal and promotional displays.
  • Monitor inventory levels and communicate product shortages, quality concerns, and ordering needs to department leadership.
  • Control shrink by managing rotation, handling, trimming, culling, storage, and replenishment.
  • Ensure coolers, preparation areas, displays, and storage spaces remain clean, organized, and safe.
  • Complete closing procedures, including sanitation, equipment checks, product storage, and department recovery.
  • Verify that closing logs, temperature records, shrink documentation, and other required paperwork are completed accurately.
  • Respond promptly and professionally to customer questions, special requests, and concerns.
  • Coordinate with store leadership and other departments to support overall closing operations.
  • Train, coach, and provide constructive direction to evening produce employees.
  • Enforce food-safety, sanitation, workplace-safety, and company policies.
  • Communicate important operational issues to opening management and prepare the department for the next business day.

Required Qualifications

  • Significant experience working in a high-volume produce department, specialty food market, grocery store, or comparable fresh-food environment.
  • Previous leadership, supervisory, or produce management experience.
  • Strong knowledge of fruits, vegetables, herbs, specialty produce, seasonality, ripeness, storage, rotation, and handling.
  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate produce quality and maintain premium presentation standards.
  • Experience with inventory control, shrink reduction, merchandising, and department sanitation.
  • Ability to lead a team, delegate responsibilities, and hold employees accountable.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to make sound decisions independently during evening operations.
  • A dependable, hands-on work style and willingness to work alongside the team.
  • Ability to remain productive and composed in a fast-paced customer-service environment.
  • Must be able to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and extended hours as business needs require.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods and safely lift, move, and stock produce cases and displays.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Five or more years of produce department experience.
  • Two or more years in a produce leadership or management role.
  • Experience in an upscale, specialty, gourmet, or high-volume food market.
  • Knowledge of organic, locally sourced, specialty, and seasonal produce.
  • Food-safety or sanitation certification.
  • Experience training and developing produce department employees.

Attributes of the Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate takes pride in operating a produce department that looks exceptional at every hour of the day. This person has a sharp eye for freshness and presentation, understands the financial importance of proper rotation and shrink control, and leads with consistency and professionalism.

They are comfortable making decisions, setting clear expectations, addressing performance concerns, and working directly alongside employees. They understand that a successful close creates a successful opening and consistently leave the department clean, organized, stocked, and ready for the next day.
